FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University was named the top college basketball student section in the Big South Conference during the 2014 Naismith Student Sections of the Year Award competition.
This honor, determined through two rounds of public votes, combined with a scoring of finalists by the Naismith Awards Board of Selectors, amounted to the Lancer Lunatics winning a prize of $250 toward the institution's general college fund and bragging rights for the year.
"It's always exciting to see the Lancer Lunatics being proactive and creating a great home court advantage for our teams," said Eric Stoller, Longwood Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing and Promotions and the Lancer Lunatics' advisor. "I am proud to see them winning the Naismith Student Section of the Year for the Big South Conference for the second time in our two years in the Big South Conference. They are a great group of students and they work hard to spread Lancer Pride to the school and the community."
The Naismith Student Sections of the Year award is presented through a partnership of The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), an affiliate of IMG College, the Atlanta Tipoff Club and administrators of the Naismith Awards. The award is dedicated to celebrating the students and fans that love college basketball and provide support to their college basketball team with passion and devotion.
"College basketball student sections help define a team's home court advantage with their infectious spirit and energy, and we want to celebrate that," said Catherine Gammon, Senior Vice President of Brand Development for CLC, the licensing affiliate of IMG College.
The Lancer Lunatics won the 2013 Naismith Student Section of the Year Award competition for the Big South Conference last year.
