FARMVILLE, Va. – Al Burge, a 6-4, 188-pound shooting guard from Garfield Heights, Ohio, signed his national letter of intent to join the Longwood men's basketball team in 2015-16, head coach Jayson Gee announced.
"Al is an outstanding student-athlete of the highest character who will be a great addition to our program," said Gee, now in the midst of his second year leading the Longwood program. "Al is a combo guard with a great motor. He is a great competitor and has the ability to impact a game in a multitude of ways."
Burge was a four-year letterwinner at Garfield Heights High School where he averaged 17.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a junior before a knee injury forced him to miss his entire senior season. He is currently playing a post-graduate year at South Carolina Sports Academy in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Also a team captain at Garfield Heights, Burge comprises Gee's third recruiting class at Longwood. He will be the fifth Ohio native on the Lancers roster when he joins the team next season, strengthening the Buckeye State pipeline Gee has developed since he came to Longwood from Cleveland State prior to the 2013-14 season.
In addition to Longwood's basketball program, Burge stated he was drawn to Longwood because of the university's available opportunities to study zoology. In 2015-16, Burge will join a Lancer team that returns all but two letterwinners and four of five starters.
