Jayson Gee Announces First Group Of Signees

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University first-year men's basketball head coach Jayson Gee has announced the signing of Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland, Darrion Allen/North Lauderdale, Florida and Damarion Geter/Dayton, Ohio to NCAA National Letters of Intent to join the Lancers for 2013-14.  Fisher (5-11, 160) is a community college transfer and will have three years of eligibility, while Allen (6-2, 165) and Geter (6-7, 215) are recent high school graduates with four years of eligibility.

“This group of outstanding student-athletes will add athleticism, speed and quickness to our program,” said Gee.  “They will collectively lay the foundation for future success.  They have all accomplished a lot in their respective prep careers, most importantly they have all won state championships.  The have all signed on to bring a championship to Lancer Nation.”

Fisher, a guard, averaged 13.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals this past season at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California.  He helped the Bulldogs to a 20-10 record and third place finish in the Western State Conference North Division of the California Community College Athletic Association, earning honorable mention All-Conference honors.  Fisher spent 2011-12 at South Kent (Prep) School in Connecticut after averaging 18.0 points, 8.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals as a senior at Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore.  He was the team MVP and was also named MVP of the Mayors Tournament in Baltimore, and was selected the Player of the Game at the National Prep Tournament in Providence, Rhode Island after his season at South Kent.

“Leron is a lightning quick point guard with the ability to pressure the opposing team's point guards for 94 feet,” said Gee.  “I knew from the minute I saw Leron on tape that he had the unique ability to impact a game on the defensive end of the floor.  He is also a capable scorer and will add depth to our point guard position.  Leron will be a fan and campus favorite with his play on the court and his positive personality.”

Allen, a guard, averaged 10.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 3.0 steals this past season at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Florida.  He helped Blanche Ely to a record of 27-2 and its second-straight Florida Class 7A State Championship, earning All-State Second Team honors from the Sun Sentinel newspaper in south Florida and All-State Third Team from the Miami Herald.  Allen and Blanche Ely participated in the 2012 and 2013 ESPN National High School Invitational.

“DJ is a very versatile guard who has the ability to pressure all three guard positions,” said Gee.  “He can also score in a variety of ways on the offensive end of the floor.  He will be counted on from day one; he has that kind of ability and talent!”

Geter, a forward, averaged 11.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.6 blocks this past season at Dunbar High School in Dayton, Ohio.  He helped Dunbar to a 21-7 record as a senior after the school won Ohio Division II State Championships in 2010 and 2012, including a 28-0 record in 2012.  Geter earned All-City First Team honors as a senior when he was also selected to play in the District 15 All-Star Game.

“Damarion is the first recruit to commit to Longwood University under my leadership” said Gee.  “We go back a long ways since my time at Cleveland State.  He is from the same high school (Dayton Dunbar) where I recruited Norris Cole (Miami Heat).  He has the pride that is a result of winning multiple state championships and playing at a school that has produced multiple professional players.  He will add depth to our front line and our fans will be excited watching him develop over the next few years.  I believe his best days are ahead of him.  He has length, athleticism and a strong desire to be coached.  Damarion will do great things for us and is an absolute home run recruit for our future.”

Longwood finished 2012-13 with a final record of 8-25, including 4-12 in its first season as members of the Big South Conference.  The Lancers return seven lettermen, including four starters, while still expecting to add at least two more new additions to the team for the upcoming season.
