Longwood Sweeps On The Road At Rider 2-0, 2-1

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader on the road at Rider University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Friday afternoon in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.  The Lancers (26-20) won the first game 2-0 as senior captain Matt Gwaltney|Chesterfield (Matoaca) pitched an outstanding complete-game shutout, and sophomore Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) hit a two-run home run against the Broncs (20-31), while sophomore Alex Owens|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) had two RBI, and junior Kyler Morgan|Lancaster, Pa. (Lampeter-Strasburg) had the pitching win in the second game.  Longwood has now attained its 24th season with at least 25 wins in the program's 35-year history, and will play a season-ending doubleheader at Rider on Saturday, May 19, in New Jersey beginning at 12 p.m.
   
Longwood took the opener behind the outstanding complete-game, five-hit shutout pitching effort of Gwaltney (3-4) who had six strikeouts and just one walk over the 9.0 innings.  Burkett (1-3, 2 RBI) provided all the offense that would be needed with his two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning that followed a lead-off single by junior Justin Lacy|Glen Allen (J.R. Tucker) (2-4) who had two hits in the game.  Senior captain Robby Newman|Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-4) had the only other hit in game one for the Lancers.
   
Mike Murphy (6-4) started and took the mound loss for Rider with the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits and two earned runs with no walks and one strikeout.  Adam Wayman (2-4) had two hits to lead the Broncs.
   
Longwood took the nightcap as Owens (1-3, 2 RBI) provided all the offense that would be needed with his clutch two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning that followed back-to-back one-out singles by Lacy (1-2) and Burkett (1-3).  Freshman Travis Biddix|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (1-3) had the only other hit in game two for the Lancers.
   
Morgan (6-6) started and gained the pitching win for Longwood with the first 5.1 innings, yielding seven hits and one earned run with one walk and four strikeouts.  Freshman Aaron Myers|Newport News (Denbigh) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits with no walks and one strikeout for his team-leading fifth save this season.
   
Brandon Cotten (3-3) had three hits to lead Rider, while Wayman (2-2) added two hits and Ian Lindsay (0-2, RBI) contributed an RBI ground-ball out in the sixth.  Tyler Smith (4-5) started and took the mound loss for the Broncs with the first 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.
