Michael Kessens Earns Big South Freshman Honor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Longwood University freshman men's basketball standout Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland has been named the Big South Conference/The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played the second week of the 2012-13 season, it was announced today by the Conference office.  The 6-9 forward averaged 17.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals in two games last week.  Kessens tallied 17 points, 15 boards and four blocks against Norfolk State, and then recorded 17 points, 11 rebounds and three steals at Arkansas.  Kessens was 12-of-16 from the floor ( 75.0%) and made 10-of-11 from the charity stripe ( 90.9%) in the two games, and of his 26 total rebounds, 12 came at the offensive end of the floor.

Campbell University senior guard Darren White has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player of the Week.  White averaged 23.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in three games last week.  He opened his week with a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds against Northwestern State, and added five assists.  White then scored a career-high 36 points on 15-of-19 shooting to lead the Camels past Appalachian State.  He scored 28 points in the second half and added four rebounds in the contest.  White led Campbell with 20 points Sunday at Iowa State and contributed six boards against the Cyclones.  For the week, he was 28-of-58 from the field ( 48.3%) and 14-of-16 from the free throw line (87.5%).

Covington (VMI) and Derrick Henry (Winthrop).  Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: John Brown (High Point) and Ya Ya Anderson (Radford).
