Longwood To Introduce New Mascot|The GAME 2.0

8.18.2011

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University will introduce its new intercollegiate athletics Mascot on Sunday, August 21, at a pep rally in Willett Hall scheduled for 6 p.m. during festivities for The GAME 2.0. The school's new mascot will participate in the rally before being transported to the Athletics Complex to welcome those who march to the facility from campus prior to the Lancers first home women's soccer match against Howard University at 7 p.m. The new mascot will be introduced again at halftime, and will be available for photos throughout and following the contest as well. Last year's The GAME was played before a raucous and record-crowd of over 1,300.

“Our new mascot is a product of President Finnegan's desire to enhance Lancer pride,” said Director of Athletics Troy Austin. “The Spirit Initiatives Committee worked very hard within a short timeframe to gain consensus amongst all of our Longwood constituents. As a result, the Longwood Family will again have a symbolic representation promoting school spirit.”

A Longwood Spirit Initiatives Committee was formed in early March with a presidential charge to establish a new mascot and school fight song. Longwood President Patrick Finnegan asked Austin to chair a committee of faculty, staff, students, and alumni to work on finding a new mascot and creating a school fight song. The new fight song will be introduced later during the fall semester.

The committee released two sketches on May 1 that were voted on for the new Longwood Lancers mascot. Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Students were emailed on May 2 with instructions on how they could vote online for the mascot, and voting continued until May 9, with over 4,300 votes received. The mascot will be a costumed individual celebrating Longwood school spirit. There is no intention to change the school's athletics nickname and/or logo.

The GAME 2.0 (Greatest Athletics March Ever) is a special community event as festivities will get under way with tailgating in the Longwood Dining Hall, and a spirit carnival in the Grand Dining Room beginning at 4:30 p.m., the pep rally featuring President Finnegan, and a 6:15 p.m. march from campus up Fourth Street and Longwood Avenue to the soccer facility on Johnston Drive for the opening kickoff at 7 p.m. This is the second-straight year for the kick-off event, a collective effort by The Office of First Year Experience, Longwood Athletics, ?Lancer Productions, Longwood Dining Services, and the Town of Farmville.
