Ross Sumner|Callao (Northumberland) tied for 32nd at the 2011 SunTrust State Open of Virginia played at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian July 14-17. Sumner finished the 72-hole event at six-over par 73-77-73-71--294 at the 7,006-yard, par 72 layout. Roger Newsom of Virginia Beach claimed the title with a 65-67-67-71--270 among the 168 golfers. Austin Gray|Midlothian (Monacan) who missed the cut at 79-78--157, while two Longwood alumni also participated in the Commonwealth's premier championship for amateurs and Virginia PGA member professionals and apprentices. Tim White '83 of Midlothian tied for 32nd as well at 73-74-73-74--294, and Jason Copeland '00 of Virginia Beach tied for 46th at 75-71-75-77--298. Lee Fisher of Lynchburg, who played one year for the Lancers (2001-02), tied for 25th at 72-69-76-73--290. Longwood will open its upcoming 2011-12 campaign September 12-13 at the Francis Marion Intercollegiate, a 54-hole tournament hosted by Francis Marion University at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, South Carolina.
