FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University will be hosting the 54-hole Manor Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament September 13-14 at The Manor Resort Golf Club. The two-day event opens the 2010-11 campaign and features a field of nine schools, including the host Lancers along with High Point, Loyola (Md.), Mount St. Mary’s, North Carolina Central, Hampton, Winston-Salem State, Bluefield, and Hampden-Sydney as well as individuals from Longwood, Virginia, and Liberty. The Manor Intercollegiate at The Manor Resort is open to the public with free admission.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Longwood University men’s golf team has been recognized as a recipient of the 2010 All-Academic Team Award by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The Lancers are one of 64 Division I teams recognized for their team grade point average above 3.0 this past academic year. DePaul University (3.66) took the top GCAA Division I honor, while nine other DI programs attained a 3.5 or better team GPA for the past year.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men’s golf was well represented at the 2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia that concluded this past Sunday at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. Five current and former Lancers competed in the annual 72-hole tournament, a stroke play event limited to 168 golfers. Leading the Longwood contingent was recent graduate Adam Webb ‘10 who finished in a tie for 12th with his eight-under par 70-69-69-72—280 at the 7,029-yard, par 72 layout. Webb was followed by fellow alum Tim White ‘82 (71-73-73-72) and junior Austin Gray|Midlothian (Monacan) (67-74-72-76) who each tied for 40th with their respective one-over par totals of 289. Also competing were junior Ross Sumner|Callao (Northumberland) (77-82) and alum Jason Copeland ‘00 (77-WD), though each missed the cut which was at four-over par 148. All except White (PGA member) played as amateurs in the Commonwealth’s premier tournament that was won by 19-year-old amateur Evan Beck of Virginia Beach (65-67-70-66--268).

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University senior Michael Young|Oakville, Ontario (Trafalgar) has been named a Cleveland Golf|Srixon All-America Scholar for NCAA Division I by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Young is one of only 119 Division I golfers nationwide to achieve this prestigious academic honor for 2009-10. To be eligible, golfers must be at least a junior or senior and compete at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in at least 70% of the team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0, and maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while of high moral character and in good standing at his university.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men’s golf incoming freshman Dylan Jensen/Ridgeway (Carlisle School) won the 20th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Junior Match Play Championship at the Nansemond River Golf Club in Suffolk late last week (June 25). He defeated Alex Taylor 4 and 3 in the final, taking a 3 up advantage after nine holes and was 4 up through 12 holes en route to his first VSGA championship. Jensen had qualified for match play earlier in the week with his rounds of 69-76--145 at the 6,679-yard, par 72 layout, earning the #15 seed in extra holes as five players had tied for the final two spots among the sixteen to advance, including #16 seed Taylor. He won his first round match 3 and 1 against #2 seed Ashton Newton before taking his quarterfinal match 2 up over #7 seed Brandon Grogan, advancing to the final with another 3 and 1 win past #6 seed Alex Lloyd in the semifinals. Jensen’s title earned him an exemption into this week’s VSGA Amateur Championship at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria June 29-July 3.
