Longwood Falls To Seattle 87-66 To End Season

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to Seattle University 87-66 on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the FGCU Classic in Fort Myers, Florida, to end the season. Longwood (7-23) was led by freshman Bria White|Silver Spring, Md. (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) with 18 points while junior Brittanni Billups|Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Seattle (8-22) was paced by Elle Kerfoot with 25 points and Salena Dickerson with 22 points. White earned All-Tournament honors for her play over the weekend.

Longwood jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead with 18:16 remaining after three three-pointers by White. Seattle went on a 19-0 run to lead 21-9 with 10:58 remaining. The Lancers cut the lead to five at 25-20 with 6:12 remaining. Sophomore Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville (Hanover) scored seven points during the run. The Redhawks pushed the lead to nine points, but Longwood cut the lead to four at 38-34 with 1:50 remaining on a layup by junior Brittany Jones|Richmond (North Florida). Seattle pushed the lead back to eight, but freshman Emilee Dunton|Forest (Brookville) hit a running 35-footer at the buzzer to make the halftime score 44-39.

Seattle went on a 9-0 run over the first 3:33 of the second half to lead 53-39 with 16:27 remaining in the game. Senior Krystal Garrison|Fredericksburg (Courtland) hit a jumper and Jones drained a pair of free throws to keep the deficit at 12 at 55-43 with 14:52 remaining. Kerfoot hit back-to-back three-pointers and Carley Butcher and Daidra Brown made layups to cap a 10-0 run with 11:52 remaining. Junior Mina Jovanovic|Smederveska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) converted a traditional three-point play and White hit a jumper and three-pointer to cut the lead to 14 at 65-51 with 10:05 remaining. SU pushed the lead back to 20 at 71-51 with 7:20 remaining. The Redhawks still led by 20 with 5:48 remaining when Jovanovic drained a free throw, Coward made a layup and junior Morgan Smith|Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 14 with 4:06 remaining. Seattle slowly extended the lead to win 87-66.
 Longwood shot 41% (25-61) from the floor, including 47.6% (10-21) from behind the arc, and 66.7% (6-9) from the foul line. White led Longwood with 18 points (7-13 FG, 4-8 3FG) while Coward scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Morgan Smith and Jovanovic scored eight points each while Jovanovic added a team-high six assists with five rebounds. Longwood had three blocked shots and eight steals and turned the ball over 20 times.

Seattle shot 47.6% (30-63) from the floor, including 47.6% (10-21) from behind the arc, and 68% (17-25) from the foul line. Kerfoot scored 25 points (8-17 FG, 4-8 3FG) and added seven assists and five rebounds while Dickerson scored 22 points (8-15 FG). Ashley Ward added 10 points for the Redhawks. SU outrebounded Longwood 41-36 and had 14 turnovers.
