FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University junior Antwan Carter has been selected as Player of the Year, North Carolina Central University head coach LeVelle Moton is the Coach of the Year, and NCCU junior Landon Clement was picked as the Newcomer of the Year in voting by both the Independent head coaches and sports information directors for the 2011 All-Independent Men's Basketball Team. This year's Independent schools included CSU Bakersfield, Longwood, North Carolina Central, Savannah State, Seattle, and SIU Edwardsville. The group decided to select one eight-member team this year, and it obviously included both Carter and Clement.

Carter, a 6-6 center from St. Petersburg, Florida, averaged 18.2 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 57% from the field and 68% at the free throw line. He led Longwood to a 12-19 record while posting career-highs of 33 points and 20 rebounds, with 29 double-figure scoring games, two 30-point games, 12 20-point games, and 14 double-doubles. Carter was named to the iBN Sports|Las Vegas Classic All-Tournament Team, averaging 21.8 points (58% FG) and 7.0 rebounds in four games against New Mexico, Colorado, SIU Edwardsville, and South Carolina State December 17-23. He led the Lancers in 10 positive statistics, and will enter his senior season with 1,285 career points (9th all-time) and 723 career rebounds (2nd all-time).

Moton led North Carolina Central to a 15-15 record in his second season at his alma mater after finishing 7-22 during 2009-10. The Eagles will become members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) next season, and played a non-league-counting schedule this year while finishing 10-5 in those MEAC games.

Clement, a 6-2 guard from Raleigh, North Carolina, averaged 18.7 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 43% from the field, including 41% on three-point field goals (109), and 80% at the free throw line during his first season with the Eagles after a transfer from UNC Greensboro. He set a new school record for three-pointers (109), and posted a career-high 33 points with double-figure scoring in each game, including 11 20-point games.

Carter, a repeat selection and second-leading rebounder among Independents, and Clement were joined on the All-Independent Team by Preston Blackmon of Savannah State, Aaron Broussard of Seattle, Stephon Carter of CSU Bakersfield, Aaron Mitchell of Longwood, Jovonni Shuler of Savannah State, and repeat choice C.J. Wilkerson of N.C. Central. Mitchell, a 6-2 guard from Matoaca, averaged 13.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting 49% from the field and 71% at the free throw line. He posted career-highs of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists with 23 double-figure scoring games, six 20-point games, and three double-doubles. Mitchell led the Lancers in offensive rebounds (77-2.6) as well.
