Longwood Falls At Wright State 77-44 On First Day Of Wright State Invitational

DAYTON, Ohio - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at Wright State University of the Horizon League 77-44 on Sunday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio, on the first day of the Wright State Invitational. Junior Heather Tobeck|La Porte, Texas (La Porte) and freshman Megan Baltzell|Stafford (Mountain View) came off the bench and led the Lancers with nine points each. Kim Demmings paced the Raiders with 16 points. Longwood returns to action on Monday, December 19, when it faces Central Michigan University of the Mid-American Conference at 2:30 p.m. in Dayton on the second day of the Wright State Invitational.

Longwood led 3-2 early in the game after a traditional three-point play by senior Brittanni Billups|Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne). The hosts went on a 13-4 run to lead 15-7 with 12:36 remaining. Tobeck scored six points on an 8-2 Longwood run to trim the lead to two at 17-15 with 10:33 remaining in the half. Senior Mina Jovanovic|Smederevska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) capped the run with a layup. The layup would be the last field goal of the half for the Lancers as the Raiders outscored Longwood 20-3 over the final 9:48 to lead 37-18 at halftime.

Wright State extended the lead to 28 at 53-25 with 13:58 remaining. The Lancers trimmed the lead to 20 at 57-37 after a pair of free throws by junior Erin Neal|Durham (Hillside) with 8:53 remaining. WSU pushed the lead to as many as 36 points before winning 77-44.

Tobeck scored nine points (4-7 FG, 1-1 3FG) with four rebounds and three blocked shots, giving her 103 career blocks, just four away from the school's career record. Baltzell added career-highs of nine points (0-5 FG, 9-13 FT),  three rebounds and 18 minutes. Junior Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville (Hanover) grabbed a team-best five rebounds. Longwood was out-rebounded 47-39 and had 10 assists on 13 made field goals. The Lancers shot 23.6% (13-55) from the floor, including 18.2% (2-11) from behind the arc, and 72.7% (16-22) from the foul line.

Demmings scored a game-high 16 points (7-14 FG, 2-6 3FG), while Molly Fox added 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-7 FT) and a game-high nine rebounds. Shaunda Sandifer added 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-3 FT) and eight rebounds for the Raiders. WSU turned 25 Longwood turnovers in to 25 points, including 12 fast break points. Wright State shot 43.5% (27-62) from the field, including 25% (6-24) from behind the arc, and 58.6% (17-29) from the foul line.

Longwood is now 1-3 all-time against Wright State in the sport of women's basketball.
