FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University men's soccer head coach
Jon Atkinson has announced that
Patrick Bain/New Market (Stonewall Jackson),
Matthew Carey/Manassas (Osbourn Park),
Michael da Fonte/Ossining, N.Y. (Ossining),
Nicholas Surkamp/Manassas (Osbourn Park) and
Nick Wright/Richmond (James River) are set to join the Lancers during the 2010 season.
“We have been working diligently to bring in the right caliber of athlete to improve our program and represent Longwood University athletics,” said Atkinson. “We feel we have achieved a great balance of positional need while also increasing the overall ability level of our team. While there may be a few more additions to our squad before preseason is upon us, we are more than happy with our newest Lancer class to date and look forward to shaping them into contributing Division I athletes this coming season.”
Bain has earned First-Team All-District, First-Team All-Region and Second-Team All-State honors in addition to being named team MVP, Shenandoah District Player of the Year and the All-Area Player of the Year. He is a three-year team captain and currently holds the team assist record. He plays club soccer with the Roanoke Star Soccer Club and is the son of Will and Hope Bain.
Carey earned Second-Team All-District honors as a junior. His high school squad has finished either first or second in the district all three seasons, advancing to the regional tournament each year. He has helped his club team to a pair of Virginia state championships and also a First Division Championship in the National Capital Soccer League. He is the son of Michael and Linda Carey.
da Fonte is a transfer from Bryant University where he appeared in 11 matches with eight starts and scored one goal. In high school, he was an All-State selection as a senior, the League MVP two years and a three-year All-League selection. da Fonte served as a high school team captain and was a Super Y Regional ODP selection. He plays club soccer for JBS FC and is the son of Joe and Debbie da Fonte.
Surkamp is the team captain and a four-year member of the Osbourn Park soccer team and earned All-District honors as a junior. He was a regional finalist with the state ODP team in 2009 and was selected to the Chelsea FC Developmental Academy as MVP of the ID program in 2007. He won a state championship in 2009 with the McLean MPS Hurricanes and currently plays for the Sya Copperheads. He is the son of Artie and Susan Surkamp.
Wright has played four years of soccer for James River. He is a three-year USSF Development Academy Player with the Richmond Strikers Soccer Club and was an ODP State Team selection from 2004-07. Wright was chosen for a Chelsea F.C. tour to England.
