DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Davidson College 2-0 on Saturday in Davidson, North Carolina, to claim third-place in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) Tournament. The Lancers were led by senior Lauren van de Kamp | Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) and sophomore Brittany Diaz | Chesapeake (Western Branch) who each scored one goal against the Wildcats (14-8). Longwood went 2-1 in the NorPac Tournament and finished in third place for the second time in three seasons. The Lancers finished the season 8-13 after winning five of their final six matches.

“We played well today,” said third-year head coach Iain Byers. “Davidson is a great attacking team, but we controlled their shooting and executed efficiently. It was a bit nerve-wracking at the end when we went down to 10 players, but we fought through it. We're proud of how we played and the third-place finish. It was especially nice for our three seniors. We wouldn't have made it to this point in the season without their leadership. They've all worked individually and as a group to help this season end on a positive note.”

Longwood controlled the match for most of the first half, outshooting Davidson 10-4 in the opening period. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaye Goulding | Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) preserved the shutout with three saves in the first half, including two saves in less that 30 seconds in the 11th minute. The Lancers had several opportunities to score on corners in the opening period, but Davison's goalkeeper Sarah Fisher kept the match scoreless at halftime.

In the second half, Longwood grabbed the 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when Diaz took a pass from senior Kimberly Sullivan | Fredericksburg (Stafford) and scored. The Lancers added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute when van de Kamp sent the penalty corner to the top of the circle and then got the ball back and scored to push the lead to 2-0. Longwood locked down and limited Davidson to just one shot over the final seven minutes to preserve the victory.

The Lancers outshot the Wildcats 17-7 and had a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. Goulding finished the match with three saves in the shutout victory. Freshman Stacey de Grandhomme | Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) attempted a match-high five shots. Fisher finished with seven saves and two goals allowed in 70 minutes. The Wildcats were led offensively by Finley Amato with two shots.
