Longwood Drops 73-58 Decision To Tulane In Big Easy Classic

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Longwood University women's basketball team dropped a 73-58 decision to Tulane University on Saturday afternoon in Lakeside Arena on the campus of the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana. Freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) led the Lancers with 12 points and five rebounds while sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) added 11 points, all in the second half, and four rebounds. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, December 12, when they take on West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, at 2 p.m..

Tulane jumped out to a 9-2 lead with 17:37 remaining in the first half. A pair of Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) three-pointers cut the lead to 9-8. The Green Wave pushed the lead to 16 at the 9:00 mark at 28-12. Longwood cut the lead to 34-21 at halftime. Longwood committed 16 turnovers in the first half that Tulane turned in to 21 points.

The Lancers took better care of the ball in the second half, turning it over only eight times in the second frame. Tulane's lead swelled to 22 at 58-36 with 10:03 remaining in the game. Billups scored eight-straight points, including four free throws, over a two minute period to cut the lead to 19 at 71-52 with 2:58 remaining. Coward scored the last three points for the Lancers as they cut the final score to 73-58.

Other key contributors for the Lancers include freshman Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas (La Porte) with nine points and nine rebounds. Senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) dished out four assists and had three steals. Garrison scored nine points and went 2-for-4 from three. Tulane was led by Tiffany Aidoo with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Indira Kaljo added 16 points and three assists while Brett Benzio scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Longwood shot 33.9% (19-56) from the floor, including 28.6% (4-14) from three. The Lancers shot 80.0% (12-15) from the free throw line in the second half and 69.9% (16-23) for the game. Tulane shot 48.0% from the field and 43.8% (7-16) from three. Longwood score 13 second-chance points and 22 points in the paint.
