NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to the University of New Orleans 70-52 in the Big Easy Classic on Friday evening in Fogelman Arena on the campus of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Nine players scored for Longwood, led by junior 3
Krystal Garrison#/Fredericksburg (Courtland) with 16 points. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, December 5, when they take on Tulane at Lakeside Arena on the UNO campus at 4:30 p.m. ET.
The game started as a low-scoring affair with UNO (5-2) leading 5-3 at the first media timeout. Ashley Gorsh scored the first seven points for the Privateers with the seventh coming with 15:26 remaining in the first half. The Lancers (2-6) went on a 15-0 run over the next 8:39 to grab the 18-7 lead with 7:11 left in the half. Garrison scored eight of the Lancers' first 18 points on a pair of three-pointers and two free throws. UNO whittled away at the lead as Longwood carried a 29-26 lead into halftime. The Privateers turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and the Lancers turned those turnovers in to 17 points.
Longwood led until a layup by Tiffina' Bennett with 17:10 remaining in the game. A Bennett three-pointer extended UNO's lead to 36-32 with 16:25 remaining. Neither team would score for almost four minutes until a New Orleans layup gave them a 38-32 lead with 12:54 remaining. The lead grew to eight at 42-34 with 11:11 remaining. Longwood cut the lead to four at 52-48 with 4:41 remaining but UNO outscored Longwood 18-4 the rest of the way to make the final score 70-52.

Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) scored eight points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman
Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds with four points. UNO?was led by Brittany Helm with 15 points and six rebounds. Nicole Holmes and Bennett each added 12 points.
Longwood shot 32.6% (15-46) from the floor, including 17.4% (4-23) in the second half. Garrison hit all four of the Lancers' three-pointers as the team went 4-17 from behind the arc. Longwood shot 62.1% (18-29) from the line. The Lancers out-rebounded UNO?36-31. Longwood had 29 turnovers to 20 for the Privateers. Longwood had 11 steals, including Fernandes, Garrison and Coward with two each.
