Longwood Falls At Kennesaw State 72-61

KENNESAW, Ga. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at Kennesaw State University 72-61 on Sunday afternoon in Kennesaw, Georgia. Freshman Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas (La Porte) was one block away from a triple-double, finishing with 16 points, a team-high 13 rebounds and nine blocks. Classmate Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) also scored 16 points and added three assists. The Lancers return to action on Tuesday, November 24, when they travel to Troy, Alabama to take on Troy University at 7 p.m..

Senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) scored the first seven points for Longwood (1-3) as it jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 16:55 to go in the first half. The Lancers led for most of the first half, giving up the lead on back-to-back jumpers by Gia Lockett and Angie Smith before pulling ahead on a three-point play by Smith with 1:24 remaining in the half. Longwood carried a 35-32 lead into halftime.

The second half was tightly contested with five lead changes. Lockett scored 13 of the Owls' first 14 points of the second half, keeping the game close. Longwood grabbed a four point lead on a pair of Fernandes free throws with 10:50 remaining in the game. KSU's Smith scored 13 points in the final 10:35 as the Owls slowly pulled away from the Lancers.

Tobeck had her first career double-double and the first double-double by a Longwood player this season. Her nine blocks in a game are the most since at least the 2002-03 campaign. The Lancers top three scorers were freshmen, with Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) adding 11 points, including three three-pointers. Fernandes scored nine points with three assists and grabbed six rebounds.

The Lancers held KSU to 28.2% (11-39) shooting in the first half, including the beginning of the game when the Owls started 1-for-13. Kennesaw State outrebounded Longwood 53-36 and turned 30 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points.

The Owls (2-1) were led by Lockett with 31 points, 19 of those coming in the second half. Smith added 19 points and six assists for KSU.
