Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University men’s soccer team defeated Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) opponent Howard University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Four players scored for the Lancers (4-9-2, 1-2-0 ASC), who scored a season-high four goals. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, October 27, when it faces Virginia Tech in Blacksburg at 7 p.m..

Longwood controlled play early in the first half, launching nine shots but struggling to put them on target. Senior Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam CTC) found the net first in the 39th minute as he ripped a shot just outside the box and sent it into the goal, giving Longwood the 1-0 lead, an advantage they would carry in to halftime.

The Lancers’ continued the barrage in the second half, this time with more shots on goal. Junior Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) took a ball and played it past the keeper who had come out to meet him, putting Longwood ahead 2-0 in the 49th minute. Longwood senior Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) added a third goal from eight yards out to give the Lancers’ a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute. Freshman Josh Woodburn/Louisburg, N.C. (Franklinton) scored his first career goal in the 86th minute on a pass off the end line by classmate Adel Sarras/Burke (Annandale) to make the final score 4-0.

“It was a job well done,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “Goals are difference-makers, not just in the box score but also to the psyche. We put on a professional display and it helped build some confidence for Tuesday against Virginia Tech.”

Longwood outshot Howard (2-11-2, 0-1-1 ASC) 18-3 and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Germain led the Lancers with one goal and one assist while Vickerton had four shots with three shots on goal. Sophomore Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) and freshman Ben Eanes/Troutville (Lord Botetourt) combined for the shutout in goal for Longwood.
