NEWARK, N.J. - The Longwood University men’s soccer team fell at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field in Newark, New Jersey in the Lancers’ Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) opener. Senior
Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) and freshman
Devin Pierce/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) each had one shot on goal. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, October 13, against Adelphi University at 3 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s ASC Championship.
Neither team could get anything going offensively in the first half. Adelphi out-shot Longwood 4-2 in the first period and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
NJIT broke open the scoreless tie in the 57th minute when Jack McVey passed to Gustav Warfving who fed Chico Lugo in the box for the goal. Both of Longwood’s shots on goal came in the final six minutes. Dixon’s shot was stopped by NJIT goalkeeper Ryan Sutherland and Pierce’s header attempt was also stopped.
‘“The match was there for the taking, we just couldn’t take advantage of it,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “We will have to work hard to bounce back against a good Adelphi team.”
NJIT outshot Longwood 10-5 and had a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sutherland had two saves for the Highlanders.
