FARMVILLE, Va. – The numbers are in, and for the second straight year Longwood athletics' signature fundraising event, the Longwood Athletics Benefit Celebration, raised more than $66,000 in support of the department and student-athlete scholarship funding.
Â
The third edition of the annual fundraiser took place at The Richmond Omni Hotel on Oct. 17 and drew a record crowd of more than 350 Lancer alumni, fans, faculty, coaches and staff for an evening of food, fun, dancing, and a live and silent auction.
Â
"We couldn't be more pleased with the turnout and show of support at this year's LABC," said Longwood director of athletics
Troy Austin. "This event embodies the benefits athletics brings to Longwood, from being able to provide unique opportunities for our student-athletes to creating a unifying element around which all members of the Longwood community can rally."
Â
Among the 350-plus in attendance were Longwood president W. Taylor Reveley IV and many members of Longwood's executive steering council, including Austin, vice president for strategic operations Victoria Kindon, provost and vice president for academic affairs Dr. Joan Neff, vice president for student affairs Dr. Tim Pierson, and chief of staff Justin Pope. Several members of Longwood's Board of Visitors also attended, including Eileen Anderson '83, David Hallock, Marianne Radcliff '92 and the honorable vice rector Robert Wertz, Jr. '85.
Â
"What a great day for Longwood," said
Trey Eggleston, Longwood director of athletics development. "You could feel the enthusiasm radiating throughout the Richmond Omni for all of the exciting things happening at Longwood. These are the events that can truly galvanize new and renewed support not just for Lancer athletics, but throughout the Longwood Family."
Â
Net proceeds generated from the 2015 LABC will boost operating budgets for Longwood's athletics program and scholarship funds for student-athletes. Those proceeds came in the form of ticket sales, auction purchases and outright gifts.
Â
Among the top selling items from the silent auction were a fully stocked wine rack that included 16 bottles of wine, a weekend stay at Hull Springs Farm in Montross, Va., and a Longwood embroidered leather executive chair. The live auction's top purchase drew more than $1,000 for a golf package and stay at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
Â
Also new to this year's LABC was a partnership with the College of Business and Economics, which held the annual Lancer Golf Classic at the Lake Chesdin Golf Club near Richmond the same day. That event also drew a sellout crowd that raised money in support of Longwood CBE students.
