FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University women's golf incoming freshman
Amanda Steinhagen|Oak Hill (Oakton) won the 85th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Women's Amateur Championship at the Glenmore Country Club in Keswick last Friday. She followed that winning formula with her second victory in less than a week by winning the 41st VSGA Junior Girls' Championship at the Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club in Kilmarnock on Wednesday. Steinhagen defeated Lauren Greenlief, who will be a junior at the University of Virginia, 2 and 1 in the final of the Women's Amateur, taking a 3 up advantage after 10 holes and was 4 up through 14 holes with six birdies en route to her first VSGA Women's Am title at the 5,808-yard, par 72 layout. She claimed this week's Junior Girls' title, also her first, with a 68-74—142 at the 5,588-yard, par 72 layout while finishing two shots ahead of runner-up Lauren Coughlin (70-74—144). Amanda became the first golfer in 30 years to hold the VSGA's Women's Am and Junior Girls' titles simultaneously, and is the daughter of Bob and Bev Steinhagen of Oak Hill.
At the Women's Amateur, Steinhagen had qualified for match play earlier last week with her two-under par round of 70 to earn medalist honors in stroke play qualifying, and the #1 seed among the sixteen to advance to championship match play. She won her first round match 4 and 3 against #16 seed Elizabeth Bose before taking her quarterfinal match 1 up over #9 seed Cindy Morris, advancing to the final with a 2 and 1 win past #4 seed Ju-Hee Bae in the semifinals. Steinhagen was the only competitor to finish with a 36-hole score under par at this week's Junior Girls'.
Steinhagen has already attained numerous high school and amateur golf honors and achievements during her young career. To name just a few, she won both the 2009 and 2007 Virginia High School League (VHSL) Girls Open Golf Championships, including this year's state title by 11 strokes in record-breaking fashion (70-68--138). Additionally, she was named the 2009 VSGA Junior of the Year, was the runner-up at the 32nd VSGA Women's Stroke Play Championship at the Meadowbrook Country Club (72-72-68--212) in 2009, tied for fourth at the 2009 North-South Junior Girls Championship (74-71-72--217), was fifth at the 40th VSGA Junior Girls' Championship at Loudoun Golf and Country Club (75-74--149) in 2009, and was an amateur qualifier for the 2009 LPGA Duramed iMPACT Classic at the Richmond Country Club (80-77--157).
