Tutoring Program

Tutoring
Student-athletes have access to individualized tutoring in a wide variety of subjects, including but not limited to English, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Business, and Foreign Language.

Student-athletes can request tutoring through GradesFirst.

Steps to Requesting Tutoring
Step 1: Log into GradesFirst at longwoodlancers.gradesfirst.com
Step 2: Click the "Request Tutor Appt" link for the desired class
Step 3: Provide times/days in which you are available to meet weekly with a tutor (give multiple options)
Step 4: Click "Send"
If a student-athlete is unable to request tutoring through GradesFirst, please contact Emily Murphy, Tutor Coordinator emily.murphy@live.longwood.edu

Expectations of student-athletes:
- By requesting tutoring, the student-athlete makes a COMMITMENT to these sessions for the duration of the semester.
- The student-athlete is responsible for meeting with the tutor at the time/day scheduled.
- If the student-athlete is unable to attend the session because of competition or required practice, he/she must inform the tutor coordinator AT LEAST 24 hours in
advance of the session in order to cancel.
- Tutoring sessions must be held in Greenwood Library or an academic building on-campus. The cannot be held in dorm rooms, lounge areas, off-campus locations, or in Tabb or Barlow Halls.

Recommendations for effective tutoring:
- Be on time for all sessions. Tutors are a support system for all student-athletes and their time is valuable.
- Be prepared and organized for your sessions.  Bring all materials (i.e. class notes, lecture slides, textbooks, practice problems, etc) to your tutor session.
- Take good, legible notes in class and bring the notes to your session.
- Prepare questions in advance for your tutoring session.
- Turn off your cell phone during your session.
- Be respectful of yourself, your tutor, and those around you.
- Communicate honestly with your tutor.

Tutoring Cancellation Policy:  We abide by Longwood's guidelines for school closings.  Therefore, if classes are being held, then we do offer tutoring services (unless otherwise noted. If classes are cancelled by the University, then tutoring is cancelled. This policy applies to campus-wide closings.  If a professor cancels a class, then tutoring should still be in effect.
Sunday tutoring: The tutoring week begins on Sunday.  If classes are being held that week, tutoring is offered.  For example, the Sunday before Spring Break (when there are no classes) there is no tutoring. The Sunday after Spring Break (when classes resume Monday morning) tutoring is offered.
