FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University Athletics finished ninth in the 2009-10 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Division I All-Sport Championships, its highest finish since beginning Division I competition in 2007. The Lancers completed the year with an overall record of 145-131-3 for an overall winning percentage of .525 percent to earn the ninth-place ranking among the 14 Virginia schools that compete at the Division I level -- finishing ahead of Radford, George Mason, Hampton, Norfolk State, and VMI. Among the women’s sports, Longwood ranked fifth with its record of 87-71-1 (.550) while the men’s sports ranked 11th with a record of 58-60-2 (.492). FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University Athletics enjoyed a successful spring semester in the classroom with a semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.07 among its 14 intercollegiate programs. The eight women’s teams posted a spring semester GPA of 3.18, while the six men’s teams posted a 2.92. FARMVILLE, Va. – Forty-four current and former Longwood University student-athletes will receive their bachelor’s degrees Saturday, May 8, at 9:30 a.m. on Wheeler Mall during the university’s commencement. All 14 sports will be represented during the graduation ceremonies as Longwood President Patricia Cormier, who is retiring June 30 after 14 years, will be the speaker for approximately 806 bachelor's degrees and 181 master's degrees that are expected to be awarded. In her remarks, Dr. Cormier will share lessons she has learned as Longwood's 24th president. The top award winners were redshirt-senior men’s basketball standout Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) and junior softball standout Briana Wells/Romoland, California (Paloma Valley), named the school’s male and female Athletes of the Year, respectively. Smith won the award for the second-straight year.
