FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University sixth-year men’s basketball head coach Mike Gillian has received a multi-year contract extension, announced Director of Athletics Troy Austin. The Lancers recently completed the 2008-09 campaign with a final record of 17-14 overall, their highest win total since beginning Division I scheduling in 2004-05, and the most wins overall since 2000-01. For his efforts, Gillian was named the 2009 Independents Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. Longwood had a home record of 13-2, its best since 1993-94, as the program is now 34-17 at home in Willett Hall over the past four seasons. FARMVILLE, Va. -- Former Longwood University standout Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) was recently named to the 2009 ECAC Division I Baseball All-Star Second-Team. A catcher, he hit .371 during his recent 2009 senior season with nine home runs, 13 doubles, 47 RBI, 41 runs, a .607 slugging percentage, a .419 on-base percentage, and a .996 fielding percentage. Quigley led the Lancers in home runs, and was among the top five in 13 overall offensive statistical categories with 20 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games. SUFFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University sophomore men's golfer Austin Gray/Midlothian (Monacan) advanced to the Round of 16 at the 96th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) State Amateur Championship at the Cedar Point Country Club this week in Suffolk. He posted a 36-hole qualifying score of 73-71--144 at the 7,109-yard, par 72 layout while tying for 14th among the 119 golfers on Wednesday. RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University sophomore women's golfer Alexa Boucher/Orange (Orange) tied for sixth-place among 38 golfers at the 32nd Virginias Women's Stroke Play Championship, a 54-hole tournament conducted by the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) at the Meadowbrook Country Club this week in Richmond. She posted a 78-75-73--226 at the 5,723-yard, par 71 layout while tying for sixth overall, and taking first-place in the Second Flight after the field was flighted following two rounds. Boucher's final-round 73 tied for fourth-best among the field during the final day of competition.
