FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University redshirt-senior men’s basketball standout Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) has been named as one of nine finalists nationwide for the prestigious V Foundation Comeback Award for 2010. Smith is a finalist for the second-straight year as he was one of 12 finalists for 2009. The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced the finalists today for the 10th annual award to be presented in conjunction with ESPN as the recipient will be announced March 30 during ESPN’s basketball coverage. FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University swept a pair of softball games from the University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 5-3 and the second game 1-0 at Lancer Field in Farmville. Junior Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) earned the win in both games and gave up three runs, only one earned, and scattered eight hits over 14 innings. Senior Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) laced an RBI single up the middle in the sixth inning of the second game, driving home the game’s only run. POOLER, Ga. – Longwood University shot a final round of 302 Tuesday in men’s golf for a 36-hole score of 621 (319-302) to win the eight-team Lonnie Barton Invitational hosted by Long Island University at the Savannah Quarters Country Club in Pooler, Georgia. ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Longwood University shot a final round of 304 Tuesday in women’s golf for a 54-hole total of 929 (317-308-304) to finish 11th among 17 teams at the Eagle Landing Invitational hosted by James Madison University at the Eagle Landing Golf Club in Orange Park, Florida. The University of South Florida won the event with its 898 (303-296-299) at the 6,282-yard, par 72 layout, while Hailey Koschmann from the University of Illinois took medalist honors with her 214 (69-70-75) among the 93 collegiate golfers. The Lancers were led by freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) who scored a career-high and game-high 28 points (9-18 FG). Fellow freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) posted her second-straight double-double with 13 points and a career-high and game-high 12 rebounds.
