Coach Bolding: “Matt is an atypical baseball natural.  Like the Hall of Fame Yankee, Yogi Berra, Matt is neither exceedingly fleet-of-foot nor particularly pleasing to the eye at first glance, but he is nonetheless a baseball player who should soon defy all the critics and win over his coaches and teammates much like the great Chris Porter did for Longwood in the early 90s.”

2009: First-year team member … will open season in bullpen and in a reserve role at the plate … High School: Four-year standout at Matoaca … All-State, All-Region, All-District, All-Tri-Cities, and All-Metro by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as a senior … Central District and Tri-Cities Player of the Year … hit .585 with six home runs, 28 runs, and 31 RBI … also played football … Central Region academic honors … distinguished Honor Roll all four years, graduating with a 4.29 GPA … played for Lancer great Fred Stoots ‘99 … Personal: Son of Wendell and Gayle Gwaltney … 2008 American Legion All-Star … kinesiology major.
