HOT SPRINGS, Va. -- Longwood University finished eighth among 12 schools in the 2012-13 Big South Conference George F. 'Buddy' Sasser Cup standings, as announced late Thursday at the annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs. The Lancers completed their first year as members of the Big South with 105.5 points from their 13 league sports for an average of 8.12. The women's sports totaled 74 points among seven sports to finish fourth with an average of 10.57. The men's sports totaled 31.5 points among six sports to finish 11th with an average of 5.25. Liberty University was awarded the Sasser Cup Trophy for 2012-13 with 244 points (13.56), its conference-record sixth consecutive title and 11th overall.
“The Sasser Cup provides us a good benchmark of how we competed on a comprehensive basis in our first year,” said Longwood Director of Athletics
Troy Austin. “We have some work to do to get better, but we do have some fantastic achievements from which we can build from moving forward.”
Longwood was led by its softball team that won the school's first-ever Big South Tournament Championship, garnering 16 points after a third-place finish during the regular season (7+9). The women's soccer team also collected 16 points, tying for second place during the regular season and advancing to the tournament semifinals (10.5+5.5). The women's basketball team added 14.5 points after advancing to the tournament championship (4.5+10). The baseball team totaled 11 points while advancing to the tournament semifinals (6+5). The women's golf team also had a double-digit point total with 10.5 points, placing third at the conference tournament.
Liberty averaged 13.56 Sasser Cup points in its 18 championship sports based on its finish in conference championships. The Flames won 12 Big South Championships in 2012-13, including three regular-season titles and nine tournament crowns. Liberty won the regular-season title in women's basketball and volleyball and shared the regular-season crown in football, while claiming the conference tournament championship in men's and women's cross country, volleyball, men's indoor track & field, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's outdoor track & field and baseball.
Coastal Carolina earned the Men's All-Sports Trophy with its average of 13.94 (111.5 points overall in eight sports). The Chanticleers won three regular-season titles, one division crown and two tournament championships to win its first men's competition since 2010-11 and fourth overall.
Liberty claimed the Women's All-Sports Trophy for the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in six seasons with its average of 13.94 (125.5 points overall in nine sports). The Flames won a combined six regular-season and tournament titles to win its fifth women's competition.
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the league's 19 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively. A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 points for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member's point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
