Longwood Plays at Regional Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team participated in the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by the University of Virginia on October 18-22. Sophomore Harry Kelleher|Sydney, Australia (St. Aloysius College) (2-1) led the Lancers in singles competition. Longwood will open its spring schedule on January 19 when the squad travels to in-state foe Virginia Tech.

“I thought we competed really well against the top players of the region,” said head coach Jakob Gustafsson. “I was especially happy to see such a high level of play from Harry. He pushed a top Atlantic Coast Conference player to three sets and made him play his best tennis in order to do so. If Harry can stay at that level of tennis going into the spring, then he should have a very successful year in the Big South.”

Kelleher, who had the No. 2 seed in the Qualifications Draw, earned a bye in the qualification semifinal before defeating Ian Uriguen of Virginia (6-2, 6-0) in the qualification final. He then moved on to the main draw, beating Jordan Dyke of George Mason (0-6, 6-3, 6-4) in his round of 128 match before falling to Lucas Oliveira of Virginia Tech (6-4, 3-6, 3-6) in the round of 64.

Sophomore Daniel Elston|St. Austell, Cornwall, England (Ralph Allen School) (1-1) also represented Longwood in singles competition, advancing to the round of 32 by defeating Daniel Grauel of Norfolk St (6-1, 6-4) and earning a bye in the next round, but was knocked out of the tournament by No. 7 seed Harrison Richmond of UVA (0-6, 2-6).
