LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University opened its 2010 women's cross country season by scoring 15 points to finish in a tie for fourth among five teams Friday evening at the VMI?Relays in Lexington at the Virginia Horse Center. The host Keydets took first place with three points. The Lancers will compete again next Saturday, September 11, at the James Madison Invitational in New Market near Harrisonburg.
The non-traditional relay race included groups of two runners completing two legs of 1.5 miles each for six miles total. Longwood was led by junior
Jessica Alley|New Castle (Craig County) (19:22) and freshman
Ciara Mading|King George (King George)?(19:59) who finished sixth with their combined time of 39:21. They were followed by senior
Mandy Ford|Powhatan (Powhatan)?(20:13) and sophomore
Jenna Sprinkle|Buchanan (James River) (21:00) (41:13, 10th), along with freshmen Nicole Cunningham-Grandy|Midlothian (James River) (22:54) and
Emberli McGann|Stuarts Draft (Stuarts Draft) (24:41) (47:35, 21st). Also competing were sophomores
Megan Short|Erial, N.J. (Timber Creek) (20:53) and
Alisha Royal|Vinton (William Byrd) (10:56, one leg).
Following VMI in the team results were Radford (14), Washington &?Lee (14), Longwood, and Concord (15).
