FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University senior
Michael Young|Oakville, Ontario (Trafalgar) has been named a Cleveland Golf|Srixon All-America Scholar for NCAA Division I by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Young is one of only 119 Division I golfers nationwide to achieve this prestigious academic honor for 2009-10. To be eligible, golfers must be at least a junior or senior and compete at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in at least 70% of the team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 76.0, and maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while of high moral character and in good standing at his university.
“Mike works very hard, both academically and on his golf game, so he very much deserves to be named an All-America Scholar,” said Longwood men's golf head coach
Kevin Fillman. “Because of the academic standing, playing time and stroke average requirements, the GCAA is one of the most difficult coaches' organizations from which to earn an award. Only a select few of the thousands who play college golf earn the right to call themselves an Academic All-American.”
Young, a business finance major with a minor in economics, has attained a 3.87 GPA and played in all 29 rounds this past year while leading the Lancers with his 74.7 scoring average. He posted season-low scores for 18 (71), 36 (72-72-144), and 54 holes (72-72-73--217) with two top 10 among seven top 20 individual finishes. Young is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies, a two-time recipient of the Jay Christopher DeBoer Scholarship, and served as president of the 2009-10 Longwood Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Michael is the son of Jim and Terry Young of Oakville, Ontario.
Longwood completed its 2009-10 season with a team scoring average of 299.6 while winning one tournament among its eight top 10 team finishes in 11 tournament competitions with a runners-up finish as well. The Lancers return six lettermen and have added two newcomers for the upcoming
2010-11 campaign which begins September 13-14 at home with the 54-hole Manor Intercollegiate at
The Manor Resort Golf Club.
