Brooke Short Named VaSID Rookie Of The Year; Three Others Named To Second-Team

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University softball freshman Brooke Short/Altavista (Altavista) was named the VaSID University Division Rookie of the Year as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID). Short also earned First-Team All-State honors. Senior Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) and juniors Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) and Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) all earned Second-Team All-State honors. Radford University’s Kristen Shifflett was named Player of the Year, University of Virginia’s Melanie Mitchell earned Pitcher of the Year honors while Radford’s Mickey Dean was named Coach of the Year.

Short started all 52 games and led team in batting average (.436), home runs (13), triples (6), slugging percentage (.808), walks (25), intentional walks (8), on-base percentage (.532) and tied for the team lead with 42 RBI. She had already earned NFCA Southeast Region Second Team honors, ECAC First-Team All-Star recognition and was also named the NCAA Division I Independent Co-Freshman of the Year. Her .436 batting average was 15th-best in the nation this year while her six triples were good for seventh in the nation. She set Longwood single-season record for runs scored and home runs and tied the record for walks in a season. Short had a 12-game hitting streak to start season (.465, 20-43) and added 19 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games.

Ketsdever started 49 games and hit .366 with 11 home runs, 33 RBI and 35 runs scored. She had a .672 slugging percentage and .449 on-base percentage with 16 walks. Ketsdever had nine multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.

Nuckols started all 52 games and hit .421 with 40 runs and 15 RBI. She added eight doubles and one triple with a .478 slugging percentage and .464 on-base percentage. She was 23-for-27 on stolen base attempts and led team with 75 hits, 23 stolen bases and 24 multi-hit games. Nuckols tied the Longwood record with a 22-game hitting streak (.519, 40-for-77) and set the Longwood single-season record with 75 hits.

Wells made 47 appearances with 41 starts and posted a 31-10 record with a 2.69 ERA. She set the Longwood single-season record for wins (31), innings pitched (247.2), starts (41) and appearances (47). Her 31 wins were 14th-best in the nation this season. Wells recorded 154 strikeouts with 105 walks and pitched eight shutouts and one no-hitter. She held opponents to .234 batting average.
