Longwood Finishes Third At Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood University posted a 36-hole score of 304-295--599 in men's golf Saturday and Sunday to finish third among 11 teams at the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia at the Birdwood Golf Course near Charlottesville. Host Virginia won the tournament with its 291-284--575 at the 6,875-yard, par 72 layout, while UVA's Ben Kohles took individual medalist honors with his 72-68--140. Longwood completed its 2009-10 campaign with the competition this (past) weekend.

Longwood was led by junior Michael Young/Oakville, Ontario (Trafalgar) with his 76-72--148 that tied for 12th in the field of 69 golfers. Young was followed by sophomore Ross Sumner/Callao(Northumberland) (78-71--149, t-16th), senior Adam Webb/Ridgeway (Magna Vista) (74-76--150, t-18th), along with sophomores Bobby Fox/South Riding (Xavier, Conn.) (77-76--153, t-27th) and Austin Gray/Midlothian (Monacan) (77-78--155, t-37th).

The Lancers' final round of 295 was the second-best team round of the day and third-best round of the tournament. Young and Gray each finished the two-day event tied for first in eagles with one each. Sumner tied for third in birdies (9), and also tied for sixth in par 3 scoring (3.00, E). Webb tied for fifth in pars (25), and Fox tied for seventh in par 5 scoring (4.50, -4). Longwood tied for the tournament lead in both par 5 scoring (4.70, -12) and eagles (2), while also second in birdies (25), fourth in pars (104), fifth in par 3 scoring (3.28, +11), and tied for fifth in par 4 scoring (4.36, +36).

Webb completed his outstanding Longwood career with a new school-record scoring average of 74.17 through 107 rounds.

Virginia was followed in the team standings by Seton Hall (595), Longwood (599), Liberty (600), and North Carolina State (601) rounding out the top five teams.
