FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University women’s lacrosse head coach Missy Ackerman has announced the recent appointment of Wendy Stone as assistant coach. Stone comes to Longwood from the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts, where she served as the varsity lacrosse and field hockey coach. She is currently the team manager for the United States Women’s World Cup lacrosse team. Stone will focus on coaching defense while being involved with all facets of the women’s lacrosse program at Longwood.
“Wendy brings a breadth of experience to Longwood program,” said Ackerman. “Her experience with lacrosse at the playing and coaching level has touched on areas of the country we wish to expand our recruiting base. Wendy’s experience as manager of the US Lacrosse team offers exposure to concepts and ideas that can be brought to the Longwood program.”
Stone was the head coach for the varsity lacrosse team at the Berkshire School from Spring 2007 through the 2009 season. The team improved from 3-13 in her first season to 8-6 in her second year. She is currently serving as the team manager for the US Women’s World Cup team where she is responsible for scheduling, meals, transportation, housing, equipment and uniforms. Stone will continue in the position through the 2013 World Cup.
In addition to coaching the lacrosse team at Berkshire, Stone also coached varsity field hockey and junior varsity hockey and served as the assistant athletic director, a history and English teacher, dormitory house head and student advisor. Stone was a coach and coordinator for the lower New England teams for the USL national tournament, organizing tryouts, selecting players and overseeing the logistics of the program. She was involved with the formation of CityLAX, an organization that focused on the growth of lacrosse in New York City.
Stone graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., in June 2005 with a bachelor of arts degree in American studies. She played lacrosse, field hockey and ice hockey while at Williams, reaching the NCAA Tournament in each sport. As a field hockey student-athlete, she earned Third-Team STX-NFHCA All-America honors as well as First-Team STX-NFHCA All-New England and Second-Team All-NESCAC recognition as a senior. She was a Scholar Athlete in all three sports.
