FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men's golf head coach
Kevin Fillman has announced that Allan Day/Midlothian (Clover Hill) has signed a national letter of intent to play golf for the Lancers. The 2007 Richmond Amateur Champion was a four-time qualifier to the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Group AAA State Championships. Day plans to major in business administration and is the son of Teresa Day and Richard Day, both of Midlothian.
“Allan is a homemade player who really understands how to play,” said Fillman. “His short game and putting motions are probably the best we've ever had in an incoming recruit. He reminds me a lot of Jason Copeland in that respect, especially given the fact that he plays left-handed too. Allan's had a number of good finishes on the national level as a junior and has stepped up and been successful in amateur events as well. Because of those experiences and his ability to get the ball into the hole, I'd expect Allan to come in and challenge for a spot in our lineup right away.”
Day (5-8, 145) finished third at the 2006 Group AAA State Championship (71-72), and was a three-time Team MVP, All-Dominion District, All-Central Region, and Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro selection. In junior/amateur events, he was the youngest player to ever win the Richmond Amateur in 2007. Additionally, Day finished as runner-up at both the 2008 AJGA-Royal New Kent (71-76-74) and the 2008 Richmond Junior (69-73, lost in playoff), was ninth at the 2008 Virginia Junior (70-72-71), and was 22nd at the 2008 Big “I” Junior National Championships (71-74-73-76). He medaled at the 2007 Big “I” Virginia qualifier (72-73), qualified for the 2007 Virginia Amateur (72-73, lost in playoff for match-play), finished 22nd at the 2007 Big “I” Junior Nationals (76-76-75-69), and is a two-time Kingsmill Junior Champion (2006, 2007).
Longwood completed its recent 2008-09 season with a new school-record scoring average of 295.1 while winning three tournaments to go along with two runner-up efforts. Overall, the Lancers enjoyed nine top 10 team finishes among the 11 tournaments this year. Coach Fillman is expected to return six letterwinners for the 2009-10 campaign.
