EASTON, Pa. – The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team topped Lafayette College 14-12 on Sunday afternoon in Easton, Pennsylvania. The Lancers improved to 9-6 while Lafayette fell to 1-14.
Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) scored a game-high five goals to pace Longwood. The Lancers return to action on Friday, May 1, at the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament in Farmville.
Longwood grabbed the early 2-0 with 28:15 left in the first half on goals by
Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) and Dean. Lafayette scored three straight goals to pull ahead 3-2 with 22:28 to go in the first half. Another Dean goal tied the game at 3-3 50 seconds later. Lafayette pulled ahead again before goals by
Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) and
Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) put Longwood ahead 5-4. Lafayette went on another three-goal burst and held a 7-5 lead with 6:15 remaining in the first half. Dean scored again to pull within one at 7-6 but Lafayette answered with a goal with 4:19 remaining in the half to push the lead back to 8-6. Illian and O’Brien scored back-to-back goals again to tie the score at 8-8 at halftime.
Both teams struggled to score early in the second half but the Lancers found the net first. Dean took a feed from
Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) to put Longwood ahead 9-8 with 23:36 left in the game. Brentlinger added another goal with 20:21 remaining to give the Lancers the 10-8 lead. Lafayette answered two minutes later to pull within one but Dean and Brentlinger each scored another goal to put the Lancers ahead 12-9 with 13:56 remaining in the game. Lafayette pulled within two at 12-10 with 13:28 remaining. Two goals by
Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) in the last nine minutes countered goals by Lafayette, giving Longwood the 14-12 win.
Longwood was led by Dean’s five goals on six shots. Brentlinger added three goals and three draw controls. Nethken had two goals with one assist and four draw controls. Illian and O’Brien each finished with two goals.
Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) recorded 13 saves in goal.
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) saw her 26-game scoring streak snapped. The streak was the 15th-longest in the nation.
Lafayette was led by Kristin Ruminski who had three goals and one assist. Emily Archibald, Julia Bateman and Margaux LeBuffe each added two goals.
