VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team fell to Villanova University 16-13 on Friday evening in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The Lancers fell to 8-6 while the Wildcats improved to 7-7. Senior
Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) scored four goals on five shots to pace Longwood. The Lancers return to action on Sunday, April 19, facing Lafayette College at 12 p.m. in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Villanova started the scoring with two goals in the first 3:56 of the game. Longwood answered with two of its own, one by $Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) and the second by Karli Brentlinger#/Gambrills, Md. (South River) to tie the game 2-2 with 23:26 remaining in the first half. Taryn McKenna scored her second goal of the game to give the Wildcats the 3-2 lead with 22:36 remaining in the half.
Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) took the feed from
Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) to tie the game at 3-3 with 21:18 to go in the half. O’Brien added her second goal of the half, this one from the stick of
Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside), to put the Lancers ahead 4-3. Villanova would tie the score at 4-4 before Longwood went on a 3-0 run over the next 4:50 to take the 7-4 lead with 13:04 remaining.
Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Seton Keough), O’Brien and Sellmayer each scored a goal during the run. McKenna scored again for the Wildcats to cut the lead to 7-5 but Dean answered with a goal to give Longwood the 8-5 lead with 9:30 remaining in the first half. After another McKenna goal Brentlinger found the net with 6:30 remaining in the half to give Longwood the 9-6 lead. Neither team would score again before halftime.
Longwood started the scoring in the second half when Sellmayer took a pass from
Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) to score only 0:36 into the period to put Longwood ahead 10-6. Villanova would score the next six goals over a 16:00 stretch to pull ahead 12-10 with 12:26 remaining. Sellmayer scored two goals in 0:24 to tie the game at 12-12 with 11:33 to go. Carly Miller would score on a free position shot with 10:55 remaining to put the Wildcats ahead 13-12 but the Lancers would answer with a Brentlinger goal to tie the game 13-13 with 10:08 to go in the game. Brentlinger’s goal would be the last for Longwood as Villanova scored three goals in 0:48 to pull ahead 16-13 with 7:56 remaining in the game. The Wildcats defense held strong and Longwood could not find the net again, falling 16-13.
The Lancers were paced by Sellmayer’s four goals. O’Brien finished with three goals and one assist while Brentlinger added three goals. Dean scored twice and assisted on another.
Carlie Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) had nine saves in goal for Longwood.
Villanova was paced by McKenna who recorded a game-high seven goals. Maggie Langan had 11 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
