FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University senior
Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) has been named the 2009 Northern Pacific Field Hockey?Conference (NorPac) East Division Player of the Year and East Division Offensive Player of the Year at the annual NorPac Conference Awards Banquet held at Stanford University’s Arrillaga Family Sports Center. Hernandez also earned a spot on the All-NorPac First Team while sophomore
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) and junior
Lauren van de Kamp/Midlothian (Trinity Episcopal) were named to the All-NorPac Second Team. The second-seeded Lancers open NorPac Tournament play on Thursday, November 5, when they face the third-seed from the West Division, the University of the Pacific, at 2 p.m. EST in Stanford, California.
Hernandez scored six goals and added one assist for 13 points on the season. Five of the her goals came in NorPac matches, a division best. The midfielder scored the game-winning goal in two matches, against Davidson and Appalachian State, and added two goals in Longwood’s win over Radford on Longwood’s Senior Day. She was named the NorPac East Division Player of the Week on September 29 for her play in the Lancers’ win over Davidson. This marks the second-straight year that the NorPac Offensive Player of the Year played for Longwood, as Carla Binnewies earned the honor last year.
Knop earned a spot on the second team after scoring four goals and adding one assist on the season. She scored the game-winning goal in Longwood’s season-opening victory over Georgetown and has anchored a defense that has allowed just 2.19 goals per game in NorPac play.
van de Kamp was named to the second team for the second consecutive year. She finished the regular season with five goals, four of those goals coming in NorPac matches. She scored one goal in a win over Appalachian State and tallied both goals in Longwood’s loss at Davidson.
Other major award winners from the East Division were Radford’s Jennifer Wisniewski as Defensive Player of the Year and Davidson’s Elizabeth Luckey as the Sheryl Johnson Academic Award winner.
