FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team is holding the inaugural Turkey Trample on Monday, November 16, on Brock Commons on Longwood’s campus in Farmville. The team’s goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of gently used shoes to donate to the overall goal of Juma’s Shoes. Juma’s Shoes is one man’s desire to collect 30,000 pairs of shoes to send to Uganda.

The Turkey Trample is a one mile relay race where the baton is a turkey leg. The entry fee is $20 and four pairs of shoes or $40. Prizes will be awarded, including for winning the race, the best individual costume, best team costume and most creative team name. To register, contact women’s lacrosse assistant coach Wendy Stone.

All money and shoes collected will be given to Juma Semakula, a Richmond resident who is collecting shoes to send back to his native Uganda. He is attempting to fill a cargo container (8’x40’), which he estimates will hold 30,000 pairs of shoes and will cost between $7,000 and $10,000 to ship overseas.
