LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Longwood University men’s cross country scored 980 points to finish 34th among 35 teams at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by the University of Louisville Saturday afternoon at the E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The College of William and Mary took first place with its 49 points in the 10K race, while Samuel Chelanga of nearby Liberty University won the individual race with his time of 29:31. The Lancers were led by freshman
Sean Flynn/Goodview (Roanoke Catholic) with his time of 34:22 to place 167th among the 231 runners. Longwood completed its 2009 campaign with the regional competition.
Flynn was followed by sophomores
Robert Webb/Williamsburg (Lafayette) (34:36, 175th),
Alex Strittmater/Haymarket (Battlefield) (36:14, 210th), and
Justin Cooke/Chesterfield (Manchester) (36:26, 211th), along with senior
Gerard Shaber/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) (37:54, 227th). Longwood had to compete without its top runner, sophomore
Darren Simpson/Crewe (FUMA), who missed the race due to an injury.
"This was our first year in the Southeast Region,” explained third-year head coach Catherine Hanson. “Longwood had previously been placed in the Mid-Atlantic, which is a smaller region and a lot less competitive. The Southeast includes schools such as Kentucky, Duke, William and Mary, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. My goal in going to the regional is to give my runners a chance to run against some of the nation’s top runners while representing Longwood University as an up and coming Division I program. There are schools within that region that we were competitive against and we proved that by not finishing last this year in a region that is a lot more challenging."
