Longwood Set To Host ASC Tournament

2009 ASC Tournament Information

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University is set to host the 2009 Atlantic Soccer Conference Tournament on November 12-15 at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The action gets underway on Thursday, November 12, when #4 Howard University takes on the #5 New Jersey Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.. In semifinal action on Friday, #1 Adelphi University will face the winner of Thursday's match at 3 p.m., followed by #2 Longwood taking on #3 Houston Baptist University at 6 p.m.. The championship match is set for Sunday, November 15, at 12 p.m. at the Athletics Complex. Admission is free to all matches.

The Lancers claimed the 2008 ASC?Tournament championship when they topped Adelphi 1-0 on a goal by Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam CTC) in the 69th minute.

Longwood enters the tournament with a 5-11-2 record, 2-2 in conference play. Longwood fell at NJIT?and Adelphi on a northern road trip in early October but rebounded to defeat Howard and Houston Baptist in Farmville. The Lancers are 4-1 at the Athletics Complex this season, suffering their only loss to Clemson University of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Junior Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) leads Longwood and is tied for second in the ASC?with six goals on the season. Senior Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) has scored three goals and added three assists for nine points.

Top-seeded Adelphi defeated Longwood and NJIT and tied with Howard on the way to a 2-1-1 ASC?record and a 11-2-4 overall mark. The?Panthers fell on the road at Houston Baptist for their lone conference loss. Adelphi is led by the ASC's leading goal scorer, Issa Tall, who has scored 14 goals this season, more than doubling the league's second-best scorer. Brandon Stoneham added two goals and three assists for seven points. Thorne Holder gave up 10 goals in 14 matches for a 0.71 goals against average.

Third-seed Houston Baptist defeated Adelphi and NJIT at home before dropping a pair of matches to Howard and Longwood on a season-ending road trip to finish 2-2 in the league and 6-10 overall. The Huskies are led by Duke Ogega with two goals and two assists for six points. Francisco Diaz and Dan Dwyer each scored a pair of goals as well. Michael Bouchahine gave up 12 goals in 10 matches for a 1.27 goals against average.

Howard, the four-seed, went 3-11-3 and 1-1-2 during the regular season, defeating Houston Baptist at home and tying with NJIT?and Adelphi. The?Bison fell on the road at Longwood. Howard is led by freshman Phillip Borde who scored three goals with four assists for 10 points on the season. Matt Marshall added three goals and one assist. Victor Thomas recorded a league-high 106 saves in goal.

NJIT finished with a 1-2-1 conference record and a 4-13-1 mark overall. The Highlanders are paced by Rahim Stennett with six goals and one assist for 13 points. Gustav Warfving has a league-high six assists on the season. Ryan Sutherland has 81 saves in goal.
