BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 women’s soccer double-overtime decision to visiting Wright State University of the Horizon League Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Raiders scored the game-winner at 103:38 of the second overtime to improve to 8-4-2 while the Lancers are now 7-5.  Longwood will play again this Thursday, October 8, on the road at Tennessee Tech University of the Ohio Valley Conference in Cookeville, Tennessee beginning at 5 p.m..

Longwood and Wright State were scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10-minute extra period.  The Lancers, however, had an opportunity in the second half at 56:44 on a penalty-kick after a foul in the box but WSU’s Meghan Hackerson made the stop.  Amber Kasmer finally ended the closely-played match 3:38 into the second OT when she took a pass from Jen Ageuci in the midfield and dribbled into the right-side of the box and beat the keeper with a shot to the far corner and into the back of the net for the Raiders.

“That’s the second game in a row that we haven’t scored a goal, so we’re disappointed in that, especially since we’ve performed well and won all of our home games up until today,” said veteran 16th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93.  “Wright State has a very athletic and well balanced team, but I thought we did enough to get something out of it (tie or win) in spite of all the chances we conceded to them.  We’ll have to get better in a hurry with five road games looming on the horizon.”

Wright State took a 15-9 advantage in shots, though it was 6-6 in attempts on-goal, but the Raiders had a 9-0 edge on corner kicks.  Senior Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) led Longwood with two shots on-goal.  Freshman keeper Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers with five saves.  Hackerson played the duration for WSU with six saves.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women’s soccer, and also the first home loss of the season for Longwood (5-1) in its next to last home match of the campaign.
