TOWSON, Md. - The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at Towson University of the Colonial Athletic Association on Sunday afternoon in Towson, Maryland. Freshman
Christina Verhulst/Yorktown (Grafton) scored her second goal of the season in the first half. The Lancers (8-8, 3-1 NorPac) return to action on Saturday, October 31, when they face NorPac opponent Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina at 1 p.m..
Longwood jumped out front in the first half when Verhulst collected the ball in front of the cage and put it home, giving Longwood a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. Longwood outshot Towson 5-3 in the first half and had a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
Towson (6-10) evened the score in the 57th minute on a Tabi Hatch goal. The Tigers went ahead 2-1 in the 64th minute when Mariah Schuette took a pass from the top of the circle and sent the ball in to the cage. Towson outshot Longwood 7-2 in the second half.
“The girls played hard, we just couldn’t hold on,” said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. “Our last two games are NorPac games, so we need to regroup and be ready to play.”
Towson outshot Longwood 10-7 while the Lancers had a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners. All seven of Longwood’s shots were on goal.
Longwood was led by Verhulst with one goal on three shots. Junior
Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) had four saves in the match.
