VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Longwood University rising sophomore Kameron Carter/Bassett (Bassett) advanced to the Championship Flight Semifinals before elimination Thursday during match-play competition at the 83rd Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Women’s Amateur Championship played this week in Virginia Beach at the Bayville Golf Club (5,766 yards, par 36-36—72).  Rising junior Kelly McAnally/Virginia Beach (Landstown) won the Second Flight Final on Friday, while rising senior Kara Spence/Hampton (Phoebus) was eliminated in the championship flight's second round on Wednesday.


Kameron Carter, the #2 seed after sharing medalist honors on Monday with Kristine Rohrbaugh of Midlothian in stroke-play qualifying, fell to eventual champion and #3 Lauren Doughtie of Suffolk (73) 5 and 4 in Thursday afternoon's semifinals (Doughtie won the finale 5 and 3).  She had defeated #10 Cyndi Carlson of Chesapeake (77) 6 and 5 in Thursday morning's quarterfinals.  Carter previously defeated #15 Shelley Savage of Alexandria (80) 3 and 2 on Wednesday, and #31 Kerry Johnson of Virginia Beach (86) 5 and 4 on Tuesday.


Kara Spence, the #12 seed in the championship flight after an opening round of 78, fell to eventual runner-up and #5 Kristen Simpson of Norfolk (74) 4 and 3 on Wednesday.  She had defeated #21 Sophia Montenegro of Oakton (83) 4 and 2 on Tuesday.

Kelly McAnally, the #1 seed of the second flight following an opening-day 87, defeated #10 Lori Millon of Norfolk (103) 6 and 5 in the finals on Friday.  She had earned a spot in the finale with a 3 and 2 victory past  #4 Brenda Dinsmore of Chesapeake (95) on Thursday in the semifinals.  McAnally had received a bye into Wednesday's second round of match-play where she defeated #8 Wanda Flora of Roanoke (100) 5 and 4.
