FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University placed four women’s golf student-athletes on the 2007-08 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Division I All-American Scholar Team. The Lancers to achieve this prestigious academic honor include rising seniors Mary Carmody/Cortland, N.Y. (Cortland) and Kara Spence/Hampton (Phoebus) along with rising sophomores Kameron Carter/Bassett (Bassett) and Brooke Mallory/Brockville, Ontario (St. Mary Catholic). The four standouts each attained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while competing in at least 50% of the team’s competitive rounds during the past year.
Mary Carmody played all 22 rounds during 2007-08 and led the team with her 76.86 scoring average. She posted career low scores for 18 holes (72, two times), 36 holes (73-72--145), and 54 holes (74-74-78--226) while earning five Top Five efforts among seven Top 20 individual finishes overall. Carmody was the medalist at the Colonial Intercollegiate (73-72--145) last fall, and has achieved a 3.97 GPA while majoring in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science.
Kara Spence played in 20 rounds during 2007-08 and averaged 79.70. She posted career low scores for 18 holes (71), 36 holes (71-75--146), and 54 holes (71-75-75--221) while earning one Top Five effort among three Top 20 individual finishes overall. Spence was the medalist in a playoff at the Lady Monarch Invitational (71-75-75--221) last fall, and has achieved a 3.68 GPA while majoring in art with a concentration in graphic design and a minor in communications.
Kameron Carter played all 22 rounds during 2007-08 and led the team with her 76.86 scoring average. She posted career low scores for 18 holes (72), 36 holes (72-73--145), and 54 holes (72-73-76--221) while earning five Top Five efforts among six Top 20 individual finishes overall. Carter was the runner-up in a playoff at the Lady Monarch Invitational (72-73-76--221) last fall, and achieved a 3.50 GPA while majoring in pre-pharmacy.
Brooke Mallory played in 17 rounds during 2007-08 and averaged 81.71. She posted career low scores for 18 holes (75), 36 holes (83-75--158), and 54 holes (85-81-80--246) while earning two Top 20 individual finishes overall. Mallory achieved a 3.72 GPA while majoring in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science.
Longwood, under the direction of third-year head coach Ali Wright, finished this past year with two tournament wins among five Top Five team finishes in 10 events. The Lancers compiled a new school-record team scoring average of 311.86, an amazing 20 strokes better than a year ago (331.14).
