BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-1 baseball decision to visiting Radford University Tuesday night at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. It was the final home game of the season for the Lancers who are now 22-26-1, while the Highlanders of the Big South Conference are 22-28 overall. Longwood will play its season finale on Wednesday evening, May 14, on the road at VMI of the Big South beginning at 6 p.m. in Lexington.

Longwood scored an early run in the first inning to lead 1-0 and it stood that way until Radford tied the contest at 1-1 with a run in the fourth. The Highlanders added two more runs in the fifth for the two-run advantage and neither team crossed the plate over the final four innings.

In the first, sophomore Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania)?(1-1) reached on a bunt-single out in front of the plate and advanced to second when the catcher overthrew first base on the one-out play. Kimble moved to third on a fly ball to right field from classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-4), and scored on a two-out RBI single to right by freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (2-4, RBI). Unfortunately, the Lancers stranded a runner on base in each of the second, third, sixth, and eighth innings along with leaving two runners on base in the seventh.

Freshman Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-4) started and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering eight hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts and one walk. Classmate Jonathan Watson/Richmond (L.C. Bird) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

Radford was led by Ben Toth (2-4) and Nick Minter (2-4) with two hits each, while Nachion Moore (1-3, RBI) and Reggie Keen (1-4, RBI) each had RBI. Moore had a run-producing double in the fifth, and Keen a run-scoring single in the fourth. Cassidy McDaniel (3-4) pitched the first 6.0 innings for the Highlanders, yielding just four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts and one walk. John Lloyd (2) picked-up a save with the final 1.0 inning that included a walk.

Radford won both games played between the two schools this season, though Longwood still leads the overall series that began in 1985 at 10-5.
