FARMVILLE, Va. -- Former Longwood University baseball standout Phil Cerreto|Midlothian has been named the Appalachian League's Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending July 25. He hit safely in all seven games while batting .481 (13-27) with two home runs, four doubles, 10 RBI, and five runs scored for Johnson City (Tenn.) as the Cardinals won four of seven. Additionally, Longwood senior baseball standout Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) has been named the Valley Baseball League's Player of the Week for week seven (July 19-25). He hit .467 (14-30) with four home runs, one triple, one double, and 12 RBI for Haymarket as the Senators won five of six games.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University Director of Athletics Troy Austin has announced the recent appointment of John Hark as the school’s new Director of Strength and Conditioning. He previously served as director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports at Marshall University since 2007. Hark was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Thundering Herd during 2006-07.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University seniors Kameron Carter|Bassett (Bassett) and Brooke Mallory|Brockville, Ontario (St. Mary Catholic) have been named to the 2009-10 All-American Scholar Team by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). The pair are among 321 Division I student-athletes nationwide to achieve this prestigious academic honor for the past year. To be eligible, golfers must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 and must compete in at least 50% of the team’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds.

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University Athletics will begin 2010-11 with a special community event, designated The GAME (Greatest Athletics March Ever), to take place on Sunday, August 22, involving the first women’s soccer home match against the University of Richmond at the Athletics Complex. The festivities will get under way with a picnic behind the Lankford Student Union on the lawn beginning at 4 p.m., followed by a pep rally featuring new Longwood President Patrick Finnegan at 5 p.m., while President Finnegan and First Lady Joan Finnegan will lead everyone in a 6 p.m. march from campus up Fourth Street and Longwood Avenue to the soccer facility located on Johnston Drive for the opening kickoff at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and all those marching to the field will receive a commemorative Longwood Lancers scarf.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men’s golf was well represented at the 2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia that concluded this past Sunday at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. Five current and former Lancers competed in the annual 72-hole tournament, a stroke play event limited to 168 golfers. Leading the Longwood contingent was recent graduate Adam Webb ‘10 who finished in a tie for 12th with his eight-under par 70-69-69-72—280 at the 7,029-yard, par 72 layout. Webb was followed by fellow alum Tim White ‘82 (71-73-73-72) and junior Austin Gray|Midlothian (Monacan) (67-74-72-76) who each tied for 40th with their respective one-over par totals of 289. Also competing were junior Ross Sumner|Callao (Northumberland) (77-82) and alum Jason Copeland ‘00 (77-WD), though each missed the cut which was at four-over par 148. All except White (PGA member) played as amateurs in the Commonwealth’s premier tournament that was won by 19-year-old amateur Evan Beck of Virginia Beach (65-67-70-66--268).
